About Tabla Lessons

The Melbourne Tabla School offers individual lessons, paired lessons and group classes in Carlton and Thornbury. The individually designed lessons and classes cater for serious tabla players as well as people who are interested in just having some fun or a looking for hobby.

The lessons aim at developing the correct technique and tone quality to allow students to create their own music and their own improvisations as tabla players while maintaining the sublime tradition of Indian tabla. Incorporating a modern approach, the lessons are based on the traditional training Sam received while living in India. In learning the instrument, all tabla students learn the spoken rhythms of the tabla known as tabla bols. According to each student's needs, lessons cover many aspects of tabla playing, including grooves and creative accompaniment, improvisation and expression as well as the more detailed and advanced techniques required to perform the entire repertoire.

A computer with a camera means the lessons are very similar to having a lesson in person. Skype is a free internet based video service that allows users to see and hear each other live on the internet. More information on skype technology can be found by clicking here.
